For the last 20 years Dr. Streltsov has been doing numerical studies of non-linear interaction between ULF/ELF electromagnetic waves and plasma in the earth’s magnetosphere and ionosphere. His current research program consists of two major parts. The first part (sponsored by DARPA and NSF) includes numerical modeling of generation of large - amplitude ULF waves in the magnetosphere by heating the ionosphere with powerful High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) facility in Alaska. The goal of these studies is to investigate possibility of artificial triggering of geomagnetic substorms by exciting natural magnetospheric resonances by changing the ionospheric conductivity in the vicinity of discrete auroral arcs.The second part (sponsored by NSF) focuses on modeling of generation and propagation of very -low-frequency (VLF) electromagnetic waves in the magnetospheric plasma. These, so-called “whistler-mode” waves or “whistlers”, are the main mechanism of remediation of energetic electrons(the so-called “killer-electrons”) from the earth’s radiation belts into theatmosphere.Dr. Streltsov's plans for the next few yearsinclude doing research and teaching graduate and undergraduate classes in the fields of Computational Plasma Physics, Electricity and Magnetism, Electromagnetic Waves in Plasma, and Wave-Particle Interactions.
