Personal profile

About

Currently, I am a Professor, the Graduate Programs Coordinator, and the Director of the Applied Cognition and Training Science laboratory in the the Department of Human Factors and Behavioral Neurobiology at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Throughout my career, I have built a consistent record of results and project management experience in human-machine research involving complex, cognitive tasks. My technical skills include qualitative and quantitative research methods such as conducting behavioral and cognitive task analyses, implementing and evaluating simulation-based research, and developing behavioral and cognitive human performance metrics. My history of projects involving socio-technical systems includes a variety of aviation platforms and, more recently, healthcare. I have ample experience entering a domain or sub-domain as an objective human factors psychologist and collaborating with domain experts to analyze systems, identify limitations, and develop solutions. This includes developing an understanding of the surrounding culture, unique challenges, and the vernacular/terminology fundamental to the respective environment and associated systems. My experience working on numerous interdisciplinary teams indicates my capability to collaborate and achieve results. I have a continuous record as a scientist on funded research despite working for a university whose mission, until recently, was primarily teaching. With my history as PI or Co-investigator, I have worked all facets of funded research on funded projects, and I understand the balance of technical work with project management. Finally, my early career experience as a government investigator gave me an understanding of that perspective as well.
