About

Dr. Flavio Mendonca is an assistant professor and researcher at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He is a Brazilian Air Force retired officer, a pilot, a Flight Safety Officer, and a senior aircraft accident investigator. Dr. Mendonca acted in the capacity of Investigator-in-Charge of several aircraft accidents and serious incidents involving Part 121 and Part 135 operators, and military aircraft. He also provided expertise related to aviation safety and the investigation of aircraft accidents and incidents during the ICAO safety management panel. Dr. Mendonca has mentored multiple undergraduate and graduates students conducting research projects. Dr. Mendonca's research interests include Aircraft Accident Investigation, Human Factors, Safety Management Systems, Wildlife Hazards to Aviation, and Competence Based Education. He maintains an active research agenda, which has recently focused on the safety management of wildlife hazards to aviation, and in fatigue identification and management in a Part 141 Collegiate Aviation Environment. He has authored/co-authored over 25 peer-refereed journal articles, and over 50 conference proceedings. It is important to mention that as a flight safety officer, an aircraft accident investigator, and a Brazilian Aeronautical Accidents Investigation and Prevention Center’s member during almost 14 years of his tenure in the Brazilian Air Force, Dr. Mendonca authored a great number of technical reports (e.g., aircraft accident investigation reports aviation safety programs), some with proprietary data and not cleared for publishing.
