Michael P. Hickey, Ph.D.

Dr. Hickey’s research interest is in the propagation and effects of acoustic-gravity waves in the atmospheres of Earth and other planets. His work involves the numerical simulation of the propagation and dissipation of such waves, their effects on chemistry and related chemiluminescent emissions, the thermal effects associated with the dissipation of such waves, and the effects of and associated signatures of such waves in the ionosphere. Some of Dr. Hickey’s more recent work has included the generation of atmospheric waves through tsunamis and their consequent propagation into and interaction with the ionosphere, and the possible effects of such waves on the evaporative loss rates of the Martian upper atmosphere. Dr. Hickey has been the PI on a number of NSF and NASA awards. He has advised MS and PhD students and mentored postdoctoral research fellows. He is a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society, a member of the American Geophysical Union and a member of the American Meteorological Society.Dr. Hickey has published 64 papers in peer-review journals and made over 100 presentations.
