Abstract

L1 orbits have been the preferred venue for observing the Sun since the ISEE3 mission in 1978. In recent years, space weather and solar scientists have begun to consider missions to L5 in order to have simultaneous viewing of the Sun from different azimuths around the Sun. Surprisingly, there has been little work on mission design to the Sun-Earth L4 and L5. Akioka et al. (2004) proposed an interesting mission to L5 for space weather. In this paper, we provide some preliminary characterization and sizing of typical L5 missions which show that such a mission is indeed feasible.
