Abstract

Computer-assisted instruction (CAI) is a term representing a variety of techniques where computer technology is used for educational or training purposes. These systems vary in sophistication from presentation software employed by instructors in their classes to sophisticated computer programs that use artificial intelligence to adapt instruction to the needs of learners. CAI is used in a variety of settings, from teaching children maths and reading skills, and teaching management or information technology skills to white-collar workers, to such complex and dynamic subjects such as medical and military training. There are a variety of synonyms for CAI, such as computer-based training, computer-aided learning, computer-based learning and computer-managed instruction, all of which indicate that computer technology is used in an educational or training environment.
