Abstract

The 17th Air Transport Research Society (ATRS) World Conference was held on 26–29 June, 2013 in Bergamo, Italy. Participants from 37 countries presented 266 papers on a wide range of topics related to aviation. The ATRS is a Special Interest Group (SIG) of the World Conference on Transport Research Society (WCTRS), and organized several sessions devoted to air transport topics at the 13th WCTR Conference in Rio de Janeiro in July 2013. We have selected seven papers from the papers presented at the two conferences for this special issue. The first two papers examine the evolution of airline business models and the effects on the demand for air travel. The next three papers address issues related to airline fleet planning and managements so as to reduce costs and better meet the demand. The last two papers look at factors that may affect airports' performance and traffic patterns.
