Abstract

Fire whirls are rapidly rotating columns of rising hot air that contain flames, smoke, and combusting debris. Some have a clearly defined, rotating core of flames, while others appear to contain mainly combustion products like smoke or lofted, burning debris. Fire whirls have been observed in wildland fires, oil fires, and urban conflagrations.
