MALL to Empower Learning and Teaching Foreign Languages: A Case Study of Learning Chinese

Abstract

This presentation will report preliminary findings of a case study exploring using tablets to empower learning and teaching mandarin Chinese as a foreign language. The presentation will include four sections. First, the presentation will brief up-to-date research related to MALL(Mobile-Assisted Language Learning), with specific topics including features of MALL, types of mobile devices applied, language skills observed, and research
results found across different kinds of studies. Second, the presentation will describe how the most popular mobile device—tablet computers have been used in teaching and learning foreign languages in general, and what the status quo of using tablets in Chinese classes in specific. Third, the presenter will share her case study in which tablets are used to empower American students to learn Mandarin Chinese as a foreign language. Finally, this presentation will address design strategies for both students and teachers when integrating MALL into learning and teaching foreign languages.
