Abstract
This study examined the effects of scenario-based training (SBT) on pilots' use of an emergency whole-plane parachute. An SBT intervention instructed pilots in the knowledge and skills necessary for parachute use. The control condition training was a combination of lecture and computer-based training. After training, participants performed emergency scenarios in a flight training device. A multivariate analysis of variance revealed that participants in the SBT performed significantly better than did participants in the control condition on several performance measures. Although additional research is needed, these results likely indicate that SBT is an effective method for training emergency parachute use.
