Abstract

Software design is an art and a science. It is an interdisciplinary task, and to be done properly, requires a varied skill set comprising software engineering, programming, graphic design, and psychology. Indeed, the second scenario described above is probably a clue that the psychological properties of the software were not give due consideration during the design of the software. This edition of Traveling in Cyberspace is about psychology and its role in software design. As you will see, having an understanding of human behavior is critical to the design of computer software. I will begin by describing how and why psychology plays an important role in software design.
